We have been planning this French Baroque test shoot for our portfolio with food stylist, Tamara Kaufman, for the past year. After several months of production, set building, planning and scheduling, we are excited to share the results.

Our creative vision was to show a table full of desserts and other luscious foods with a "Marie Antoinette" styled model in a beautiful but dark opulent room setting. Easy enough, right...? The important lesson from this project was realizing that sometimes you have to turn "test projects" into actual jobs to insure that you complete them in a timely manner. The unexpected lesson from this project was gaining essential experience as the producer AND the client.

As a client you get to experience the excitement of your dream becoming a visual reality. As a producer, your job is to make the client's experience a smooth, relaxing event with all of the right elements and talent fulfilling that vision. As the photographer you work at balancing the client's expectations with the producer's reality, working within in a predetermined budget to put it all together into beautiful imagery. We may have created the perfect storm by combining all of those people into one. This taught us how all of the titles above work (and sometimes conflict) with each other in getting to the final shoot day. If you want to learn what it takes to be an advertising photographer, I recommend that you create 1-2 projects a year that force you to do the job of each of the roles I have mentioned above.

For our commercial/advertising clients we will hire a producer, stylist or experienced assistant to "produce" a photo shoot if the budget allows for this. Many times our clients may not have the budget for this or would prefer that the photographer produce the project. The more experience you have with putting together a photo shoot the more it will help in doing so for a client. At the very least, it will allow you to gather important details to share with a producer/assistant in helping projects flow smoother from beginning to end.

For this project, we started with a rough idea, French Baroque and food. Next we started pulling together imagery and notes that we felt matched that vision. For this, Tamara and I utilized Pinterest and our favorite Art History books to share ideas of paintings from the French Baroque period and specifically some history on Marie Antoinette. More importantly, we made a decision early on that we did NOT want this to be a historically accurate representation and simply wanted the inspiration from the time period. At this point Tamara began to gather supplies to build the room set and we worked together in roughing it in until we could bring in our set builder, Tony Anderson, for construction of the set.

What we learned-
• Put it on the calendar, give it a job number, schedule and hold the people you want to work your project. Schedules not lining up...? Then negotiate rates with your favorite vendors that will allow them to treat it as a real job they can schedule but stays on budget for you.
•Think about the scope of the project, what you can complete on your own and what you need help with. Work as a team, talk through ideas and always speak up if something needs to change or be added to make it all come together the way you want (a client would do this, remember you are the client on a test shoot as well as the photographer)
• Think outside the box when visiting your hardware store or builder's supply in finding bits & parts that together create great details.
• Hire the right people for the right job. For example, we found a great dress (within budget) but it was not quite as refined as we wanted and the fit was too large for our model. We hired Danielle McKinney Haberdashery to complete all the detailing & fitting. Also, our set builder gave us great ideas for finishing out the set based on all his experience that cut the construction time in half.
•Expect to put in some long hours and extra weekends if needed. Tamara and I had busy schedules we had to work around but committed ourselves to specific times to get together and work on set construction, food preparation and prop shopping.

October has been a busy month at the studio. The new prep kitchen was put to the test with all the different food clients we had in this month.

We were especially excited to work with Wisconsin Cheese again for their 12 months of cheese series -yes, 12 different, delicious Wisconsin cheeses tempting us everyday for the week long shoot. Though we cannot show you the yummy images from this month's photo shoot, (for those, keep an eye on Wisconsin Cheese Talk) we can show you highlights from the 2014 Wisconsin Cheese of the month campaign that we photographed last Fall.

I think it's the perfect title for his series because he is a commercial and advertising photographer himself and has found the time to interview other pros in the industry. I have found myself checking back through the interviews he has done with a wide range of photographers to hear the inspirational stories. I hope the interview I did with him is inspiring to others:

Madison Magazine's May cover shoot featured three local craft beers: Ale Asylum's, Nut Brown, Vintage Brewing Co.'s, Weiss Blau and Karben4's, Fantasy Factory.

We started with one tall single beer and decided to change it up by featuring three distinctly different flavors with great color & depth. Photographing a single beer with a perfect foamy head is challenging enough but now our food stylist, Jim Rude, had to work with 3 different types of beer simultaneously. Needless to say, Jim has a few special techniques just for this purpose and after a little experimentation we had our shot. A few fried cheese curds later and the "local craft beer explosion" cover was complete.

Cento is the newest restaurant endeavor from our client, Food Fight Restaurant Group. Chef Michael Pruett along with Sommelier (and managing partner) Caitlin Suemnicht are bringing a special dining experience to downtown Madison. Cento will combine Old World Italian traditions with modern techniques.

We spent the day with Chef Michael photographing (and sampling!) some of his new dishes. I hope everything we tried makes it on the final menu because I can't wait to try them again.
All I have to say is, "wow, Panama!".

Bocas Del Toro is a gorgeous and relaxing community, full of delightful expats who have found a way to make a living and enjoy the island lifestyle. The San Blas Islands are stunningly beautiful and home to the Kuna Indians- from wikipedia: The San Blas Islands of Panama are an archipelago comprising approximately 378 islands and cays, of which only 49 are inhabited. They lie off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, east of the Panama Canal.

On our way to the San Blas Islands, we weaved our way through smaller islands, and enjoyed the company of a number of dolphins who would find our boat to swim and jump in it's wake. We crossed the opening to the Panama Canal and were amazed by the size and number of freighters lining up to work their way through the Canal.

Once we sailed into the San Blas Islands we visited a couple of different islands where many other "cruisers" live year round on their boats. I have included this link to the San Blas Islands to give you more information about the it's history and people. I will say that the smaller islands were the absolute perfect tropical deserted island that all of us picture in our minds.

The sailing was amazing and Panama City was beautiful. We did get to spend a day and a half in the city exploring and taking photos...
What a great shoot with Art Director, Tim Burton, for the December cover of Madison Magazine. We photographed this tempting stack of blueberry goodness on location at Marigold Kitchen.
A popular place like Marigold's doesn't slow down for a photo shoot so we tucked our set up & gear into a corner next to some hungry breakfast patrons one early Thursday morning. Coffee and a photography tutorial while you wait, courtesy of Madison Magazine! We also want to give a shout out to Tim for the food styling on the stack of pancakes and, ofcourse, the great cover design.Chris Hynes Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14028350206775905216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2771294680708128452.post-79487869206547050642012-06-28T14:31:00.000-05:002012-09-20T12:35:33.438-05:00Photographing real ice cream with Jim Rude

I have always been a proponent of "keeping it real" in all aspects of my photography and photographing ice cream can be the ultimate challenge. Food stylist, Jim Rude, is an amazing food stylist and happens to specialize in working with real ice cream.

During our shoot we took a little time to film Jim on set and prepping in the kitchen. Check out the video to see a true master at work. Jim offers his personal philosophy, insights and tools for working with real ice cream. Video credits go out to Mark Gillespie at GHP Studio and Emily Kuh at Kuh Creative

July 15-18, I competed in the 103rd Race to Mackinac. Our S2/9.2, "Intuition", finished 9th in it's division and weathered the horrific thunderstorm that swept through close to midnight July 17. The sailboat "Wingnuts" capsized during the storm and 2 of it's crew lost their lives. It is the first time in the history of the race that anyone was killed sailing in the race.

Our boat had a crew of 6, with designated pairs rotating shifts. Two of the crew had competed in the race the past 3 years (finishing 2nd in their division the last 2 years). For the rest of the crew it was the first time to compete in one of the most challenging and longest annual freshwater sailing races in the world.
Total elapsed time 72:56:17
I'm already planning for next year's 104th challenge.

We are sailors. My husband, Mark, and I co-own a S2, 9.2 with several friends. Mark and the crew have placed 2nd in their division in the Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac the past 2 years. This will be the first year I will be joining the crew.

The CYC Race to Mackinac is one of the most respected fresh water yacht races in the country. All sailboats, big & small may compete with an invitation from the race committee. Our boat, "Intuition", is in the small category and races in it's division with similar boats of size and sails.

In preparation for the Race to Mackinac we took on the Queen's Cup race on July 1, 2011. The race starts at the South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee, WI and ends in Muskegan, MI. Our elapsed finish time was 10 hours and 31 minutes. The beginning of the race was intense. One of the boats in our division demasted (exactly what it sounds like!) and we were pushing the hull speed of our boat by surfing off of 8 foot swells for the first third of the race. Well, here's a short clip of what you could see from our boat:

We will start the Race to Mackinac for our division on July 15. If you would like to share in the fun just check back here for a link to track the boats during the race. I will post that information as soon as the CYC web site has it available.

Also, here's a bit of our new video endeavors, a rough cut right now but we hope to continue developing our video and editing capabilities. We have also made investments in better sound equipment- the goal is to do all of these things AND sail the boat at the same time. Enjoy:
Michael invited me to join him for a morning at Fountain Prairie Farms while he inspected what the organic garden would offer him for the week's menu.
After touring the farm I took a little time with Michael in the restored barn to do a few film portraits. I found one last roll of Agfachrome 1000 for my Hasselblad 500C. It felt amazing to hold the camera again and it was easy to remember how to load the 120 film back, even after 8 years of not using it. I love that camera and I will be making a point of bringing it to more of my projects.
Papa Jimmy's has been a family owned business in Cottage Grove for 13 years. With the opening of his new restaurant and with the help of Sarah Hurley of Weber Marketing Jimmy knew it was time to take the next step- great photography of his delicious food.

It can be difficult for any major restaurant chain to take the plunge into a full-on photography campaign so imagine the trust that Jimmy, a small independent restaurant acknowledged with this project. As a small business owner myself, I take great pride in helping businesses grow and succeed. The theme for the marketing campaign is, "warm and inviting". We took this same direction with the photography by working on wood surfaces, selective focus and lighting that felt intimate and pulled you in to almost taste the food. Tamara Kaufman made her magic happen with the food styling but also noted that Papa Jimmy's was using the best in fresh ingredients which helped make everything look mouth watering.
After enjoying cocktails from Death’s Door Spirits the 130 guests at Troy Gardens made their way to the “long table” to enjoy the rest of the evening.
Outstanding in the field or as it’s fan base refers to it, OITF has grown from a few small dinners on farms in Santa Cruz, California to a nation wide traveling event. Founder and Chef/artist Jim Denevan, understood 10 years ago that people wanted to know where their food came from. Today more than ever, there is growing support for small farmers who work hard to entice us to our local farmer’s markets and keep us asking for locally produced products in our restaurants. For this dinner all the meat, including rabbit, came from local farms and the heirloom tomatoes were picked moments before right there at the gardens.

The food was amazing, the guests delightful and the crew worked hard through out the 80 plus degree evening to bring it all together.
